Recent Updates and Currently Reading | March 31

Happy Easter to those who are celebrating this weekend. We are enjoying a much needed weekend at home, but we do plan to head out to the beach for Easter tomorrow.

This week was full of gross weather, but the weekend is shaping up to be beautiful. My oldest son made the switch to roller blades this week. I never could get the hang of roller blades when I tried, but it took him all of one minute to learn them. I love anything that gets my kids off of Minecraft/Roblox for a while.

Read Last Week

Boy’s Life by Robert McCammon Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Boy’s Life by Robert McCammon - I posted some of my thoughts about Boy’s Life earlier this week. It's my favorite book of all time so check it out if you haven't seen it.

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery -  I think I’m going to DNF Anne. I made it to 25% before I started avoiding her like the plague. I love her, and I think I see why I adored this book as a young girl, but I’m so bored. I feel bad because I was reading it as part of a readalong, but I was only going through the motions before I put her down for good.

Review Copies

Terror is Our Business: Dana Roberts’ Casebook of Horrors by Joe R. Lansdale & Kasey Lansdale Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente

Terror is Our Business: Dana Roberts’ Casebook of Horrors by Joe R. Lansdale & Kasey Lansdale - Joe Lansdale is a must read for me, and I don’t think I’ve ever read his Dana Roberts stories. This looks like an awesome collection.

Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente - Space Opera is “an over-the-top science fiction spectacle from bestselling author Catherynne M. Valente, in which sentient species compete for glory in a galactic musical contest—where the stakes are as high as the fate of planet Earth.“ This book sounds epic, and I have to read it. Thank you to Saga Press for being there in my time of need.

Recent Acquisitions

Holes in the Ground by J.A. Konrath and Iain Rob Wright Mojo Rising by Bob Pastorella Witch Hunter: Into the Outside by J.Z. Foster

Holes in the Ground by J.A. Konrath and Iain Rob Wright - Thanks, Barb, for mentioning this on your update post! I loved Origin, and I had no idea there was a sequel.

Mojo Rising by Bob Pastorella - Mojo Rising is a strange trip through a world of thugs and junkies, hallucinations and apocalypses. Some doors you walk through, you can’t come back in.

Witch Hunter: Into the Outside by J.Z. Foster - The author is calling it urban fantasy, but readers are calling it horror. Either way, I’m looking forward to reading a book with witches since there’s a serious lack of witch books if you ask me.

So what about you? Let me know what you're reading this week or leave me some links!

  1. I never could get into the Anne books. I liked the movies so much I figured they’re good enough.

  3. Happy Easter, and I hope you enjoy your reads! Weather has been rotten here lately too, but today was probably the first nice weekend we've had since the start of spring. On the first day of spring, we actually had a snow storm, lol!

    1. Happy Easter. The weekend weather turned out to be great! (Although I'm sunburned from reading in the sun too long.)

  7. Very curious to hear what you think of Space Opera! I love some of Valente's other novels, but I'm not sure "Eurovision in space" would be my cup of tea...And how fun with the roller blades! I loved mine when I was a kid :)

  8. Happy Easter! Hope you have a good day at the beach. I'm ready for some beach weather here too, but I guess we have to wait a little longer since it's still pretty cold. Ugh spring is late lol.

Space Opera looks like a trip!

  14. I've never read the Anne books and probably shouldn't start now. I have a feeling I'd feel the same as you. I read Little House on the Prairie a few years and it did not thrill me. I probably would've adored it as a teen though.

    1. Oh, man, you're right. I liked Little House as a kid, but it would probably end up just like poor Anne here....

  15. Good that you enjoyed the beach too on Easter Sunday. Such a blessing to have it nearby. Sorry that Anne didn't work for you in the adult reading of it. I did reread it by listening and enjoyed it that way.

    1. We are lucky that we both get to do that. I should have started out listening to the audio of Anne. That might have helped propel me further. I tried making the switch, but it was too late for me.

  16. Happy Easter :-) Roller blades, fun! What do you mean by he made the switch though? Like from roller skates? Cuz I used to go to roller rinks sometimes, and once I decided to try renting skates instead of blades, and I ate it before I even made it like three feet from the bench, haha. Space Opera sounds like a lot of fun, looking frward to your thoughts on it!

    1. Yes! From roller skates. :) He has definitely converted over to blades. I'm the opposite of you guys - I would much rather be on skates!

  18. Space Opera sounds interesting. *adds to tbr*

I love Anne of Green Gables, but it is definitely in the bathroom book pile for me. You know, the sort you can set down after reading a couple of chapters and then come back to a week (or more) later and just pick it right back up.

  19. Awww, I love Anne, but I understand if you can't get into it. You gave it a fair chance. Space Opera looked interesting to me, it is probably my speed as far as Sci-fi goes.

  20. I remember loving Anne of Green Gables when I was a kid but I think, like you, I'd probably get a little bored with her now. Thinking about reading them when I was younger does bring back good memories though :)

  21. Oo I love witchy books. I am looking forward to your thoughts on Witch Hunter.

I also need to read Bird Box - I just read that it is the scariest book set in my state on some book list. :)

    Have a great week!

    1. I thought of you, Erin, when I was posting that! :) You posted a witch book recently that made it on to my wishlist. Bird Box is set in Detroit, I believe. That book had me TENSE. I loved it.

  22. I still like the Anne books as occasional rereads, but I can see how they aren't everyone's cup of tea. If you like the people who are doing the reread so are invested in it you might try audio -- a good voice might help it seem more interesting. I like audio for rereads because if my attention wanders I don't need to back up.

    1. I think they all just finished up reading it. I was a total loser. :( I did get the audio recently during a promotion so maybe someday I'll come back around to it.

  23. It didn't matter how much I said I loved horror, my mum's cousin ALWAYS bough me classics like Anne of Green Gables! So frustrating and I never read any of her gifts!
