I'm still trying to adjust to summer so things have been pretty quiet/sporadic on the blog. Bare with me while I try to find my summer footing!
Read Last Week
The Cellar by Richard Laymon - ⭐ I'm quite certain I just read my worst book of the year so at least I got that out of the way! (Full disclosure, I made it past the halfway point before skipping ahead to the final few chapters.)
The House by Bentley Little - ⭐⭐⭐ This was a reread with Lilyn. I was pretty meh about The House the first time I read it, but I think I enjoyed it more this time around. (I'm keeping my original rating intact.)
Recent Acquisitions
The Devil's Rosary (The Complete Tales of Jules de Grandin #2) by Seabury Quinn - At some point I want to start making my way through the stories of Seabury Quinn. I have a review copy of the first Jules de Grandin collection that I still haven't started. When I saw the second volume go on sale, I grabbed it.
The Big Book of Hap and Leonard by Joe R. Lansdale - My understanding is this edition combines two books of Hap and Leonard stories plus some extras. Whatever it is - it's a big book of Hap and Leonard! That's all I really needed to know.
Tales from the Lake: Vol.2 edited by E. Audsley, R.J. Cavender, and J. Mynhardt - Thank you, Barb, for including this freebie in your post this week!
Current Distractions
Have you guys seen Hereditary? It was one crazy, disturbing movie. I forgot I was even in the theater at one point. If you love being stressed the hell out in a horror movie, I would recommend seeing Hereditary in the theater. Half of my tension came from the soundtrack.
So what about you? Let me know what you're reading this week or leave me some links!
This post is being shared as part of Book Date's It's Monday! What Are You Reading? and Caffeinated Book Reviewer's The Sunday Post.
Sitting and relaxing are two of my favorite activities. I usually try to NOT plan something for one of the weekend days, because I am so done from commuting all week. Good for you!
ReplyDeleteYes! My dream is to be lazy all weekend every weekend, but I always have stuff going on especially since I have to work all week. This was a rare and wonderful weekend of no commitments. :)
DeleteOh my goodness, Jennifer, all your books look very creepy!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

Right? This was definitely a week of straight up horror. Have a great week!
DeleteSounds like the perfect way to spend the day. I thought the scariest thing about Hereditary was that creepy music. I found it more confusing than anything else.
ReplyDeleteThat soundtrack about did me in.
DeleteOoo, yes, Hereditary is a good one. Hope your latest books are better than meh. Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI love quiet, relaxing weekends- especially when it's 1000 degrees out. Now I need to find an excuse to not go outside lol. I have not seen Hereditary, but it sounds scary as heck!
ReplyDeleteYes! I did do a little gardening yesterday, but that was the extent of me going outdoors the entire weekend.
DeleteI loved Hereditary! Toni Collette was simply astonishing, wasn't she? That was the first time in a long time a horror movie managed to genuinely surprise me.
ReplyDeleteShe did an amazing job! I thought Gabriel Byrne did, too.
DeleteRelaxing sounds like a great way to spend a weekend :-) Tbh I'm not very good with scary or disturbing movies, so I think I'll pass on that one! Looks like you got some interesting new books, I hope you enjoy them!
ReplyDeleteThe older I get, the harder it is for me to handle horror movies. Becoming a mom ruined me for so much horror.
DeleteI've been wanting to watch Hereditary since it came out, but I'm kind of scared of going to see what I've heard is an incredibly disturbing movie with my husband. He's not usually into those kinds of films... I may wait until it comes out on blu-ray. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteHereditary is one I would definitely recommend experiencing at the theater, but you are most likely right about your husband. I will never ask my husband to see this one. It would not go over well for him.
DeleteI hope you had a good Father’s Day. Enjoy your new books! They look excellently creepy.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Thank you. We did! :)
DeleteI may have a copy of The Cellar, but I think I'll stay far away! Hope your summer is a good one, my son just came home from college and now I have another mouth to feed! Lol.
ReplyDeleteYeah, keep The Cellar buried in your books somewhere. :) Hi, son! I know you are glad to have him home. And wow, kids can eat, can't they?
DeleteWhat kind of "horror" is Hereditary? I can't really do blood and gore movies, but when it comes to atmospheric, psychological "stress-you-out" type of horror, I actually love it. Just want to know what I'm in for before checking it out :D
ReplyDelete~Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum
It's a mix of both and it is relentless. It's most definitely not for everybody.
DeleteI agree. Hereditary is all of those things. I feel like people should see it because the acting is amazing, but... like Bark said... it's not for everyone. There aren't very many graphic scenes, but they are the kind that you won't forget. Ever.
DeleteDefinitely need to check out Hereditary now. I love me some scary movies.
ReplyDeleteWell, that movie still has me in its clutches!
DeleteI'm a big fan of Richard Laymon but The Cellar isn't one of my favourites.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read many Laymons, but I have no doubt this will rank low for me overall.
DeleteHahaha, so sorry about The Cellar :) And I'm with you on Hereditary. That was one messed up film.
ReplyDeleteHaha! The Cellar... At least I finally read it! I've had it for so long, and I'm pretty sure I've had people recommend it to me. WHAT. :) Now I know! I have a copy of The Beast House, and can you believe I'm actually curious?! What is wrong with me? LOL.
DeleteAfter The Cellar and The House you should look for a book called The Attic so that you have it all covered. Too bad The Cellar wasn't enjoyable. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteHahaha. You are so right, Kathy! That is the next logical book for me. :)
DeleteI just went and grabbed Devil's Rosary - it was still on sale. Now if I can find the first one as cheap :) I read The House years ago and barely remember it. I went on a real Bentley Little kick one, but haven't picked up anything in the past few years. My coworker went and sat Hereditary last night and just told me how messed up it was. I can't wait to see it.
ReplyDeleteI went on a Bentley Little kick, too, after reading The House. :) I read most of The Association last year. It was the first Little I had read in so long! (I still need to read the end of it, though.)
DeleteMid week already but enjoy the rest of the week and good reading.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mystica!
DeleteYep,I'm slow as molasses at the moment! Lansdale is an author I've not read yet although I'm fairly certain I have one of his books on my kindle and I do like the sound of his work. Let's hope our summer reading picks up a bit.
ReplyDeleteLynn :D
I'm reading Lansdale's Cold in July at the moment and really enjoying it. He's an author I have come to count on. :)
DeleteGlad you a had good father's day! Relaxing weekends are nice (also short), so enjoy it! Honestly I need one sometimes, but maybe in the future one day. 😅
ReplyDeleteYou are right about those weekends being too short! I hope you get a good, relaxing weekend soon.
