Waiting on Wednesday | Doctor Sleep by Stephen King

This post is being shared as part of Breaking the Spine's Waiting on Wednesday.

Yesterday I posted my top ten wishlist books being released in the spring. I'm going to skip out to September today and show some love and anticipation for another upcoming Stephen King release. The Shining has a very special place in my heart. It was the first King book I read in my childhood, and I read it many times. It will always be one of my favorite books of all time. I should be nervous about a sequel, but I'm not. I'm excited! I absolutely cannot wait for Doctor Sleep!

Doctor Sleep (The Shining #2)
by Stephen King
September 24th 2013 by Scribner

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the “steam” that children with the “shining” produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant “shining” power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

That cover! I love that cover. Who is on that cover? I ordered my copy of Doctor Sleep... now I just need September to get here!

  1. I loved yesterday's post. I love discovering books that will soon hit the shelves. There is nothing like the feeling of anticipating a book!

I don't really like that cover for Doctor Sleep but I am excited to read it. I really really can't wait for Nos4a2. That one I think will rock.

    1. Thanks, I love looking forward to books, too. :)

The Doctor Sleep cover has grown on me SO much. The first time I saw it I didn't notice the face. Once I saw the face I was entranced by it.

    2. Agreed, not really behind that cover. It feels rather amateurish to me. Even with the face (sorry Jennifer!).

    3. I am never offended by differing opinions! It's unfortuate that smoke doesn't allow for much dimension, but I can really see the finished hardback in my mind already. Like it is already on my shelf. Which I wish it was... :)

    4. Well, I have to say, a book that makes you want to own it, long before it touches your hands... that's a great thing!

  2. I can't freaking wait for this book! I've been avoiding excerpts and such - I find it to be basically a form of torture getting a taste and then waiting months to read the rest! I'm so excited, though!

    1. I think blogger just ate my comment. This may wind up something multiple times. :(

I don't really read excerpts, either, but I did listen to King do a reading from Doctor Sleep when I first heard about it. But that was just so I could listen to King. :)

  9. I've actually never read a Stephen King book. It kind of makes me think I should challenge myself to read those authors that I'm ashamed I haven't read yet!
