Recent Updates and Currently Reading | October 21

It took long enough, but it's finally starting to feel like Fall!

Posted Last Week

Last week I didn't post a single thing. Since that includes not posting an update last weekend, I'm reaching back an extra week.

Book Review | The Willows by Algernon Blackwood
Why I Love Horror + Some Recommendations

Read Last Week

The Cats of Ulthar by H.P. Lovecraft (★★★★☆)

Frindle by Andrew Clements (★★★★☆)

The Rats in the Walls by H.P. Lovecraft (★★★★☆)

The Salt Line by Holly Goddard Jones (dnf)

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (★★★★★)

Thank you, Bark, for recommending The Cats of Ulthar! That was a fun one! Lark also mentioned having read The Rats in the Walls so I gave that one a read, too. Unfortunately, the Goodreads description for The Rats in the Walls was one giant spoiler so beware there.

I wound up DNF'ing The Salt Line at 35%. I couldn't get into it, and I have no idea why.

I loved The Picture of Dorian Gray. If the stars align for me, I'll have a review out this week for it.

Review Copies

Many, many thanks to Rachel Caine for the review copy of Killman Creek. Killman Creek is the sequel to Stillhouse Lake (review). I've been so anxious for this book so I was thrilled to receive an invite for an early copy.

Current Distractions

  • American League Championship Series: Astros v. Yankees. One game left to determine who makes it to the World Series. (Go 'Stros!)
  • I finished season one of Riverdale. So. Many. Feelings. I 100% plan to catch up on season 2 this weekend. I'm not waiting.
  • Since I needed a Riverdale/Netflix replacement, I started watching season 12 of Supernatural. How is this show still going?
  • I'm getting very, very excited about Stranger Things next week.

So what about you? Let me know what you're reading (or watching) this week or leave me some links!

  1. I haven't read Stillhouse Lake yet but with so many to read, I might be leaving that one until next year!

    1. After reading Stillhouse Lake you might get just as anxious for the sequel as I am so waiting is OK!

  2. Oh no...I have a copy of The Salt Line to read for review, but I haven't started it yet. It worries me that it was a DNF for you. Hopefully my experience is better I guess.

Have a great weekend. - Katie

    1. Please don't let my DNF of The Salt Line sway you. I usually know why a book isn't working for me, but I'm at a loss for The Salt Line. I requested my library buy a copy based off the great reviews. You may love it.

  4. Yea for fall (and Peanuts). Watching it is a tradition on our house. Sad to hear about The Salt Line. I had a copy from First to Read but decided to let it pass. Maybe I should be glad I did. Glad to see you back! I missed your posts.

    1. Thanks, Barb. Things have been so busy for me. I'm not sure why The Salt Line wasn't working for me. I just felt like I was forcing myself along.

  7. Sorry to hear about the Salt Line DNF! I really enjoyed the book, but yeah, it's a bit of an odd duck. It seemed like the publisher didn't even really know how to market it. And yes, I'm soooo excited about Killman Creek! I nabbed an eARC from an invite widget this week too!

    1. For whatever reason, I wasn't connecting to The Salt Line. It was a library borrow so I couldn't really put it down for too long to see if my mood changed. YAY for Killman Creek. I'm going to read that one probably after my next book.

  13. I can't wait for Killman Creek and Stranger Things. I read a couple of reviews that liked The Salt Line although it did sound difficult to pin down somehow. I don't have a copy anyway but I've added it to my wishlist for the future - who knows!

    1. I was on such a Riverdale kick when season 2 started so I had to take the plunge. It's so nice when the eps are on Netflix for the binging, though.
