Recent Updates and Currently Reading | September 29

It's almost October!! We ring in October with my husbands birthday and lots of decorating. I've already started a little bit of decorating, but I'm ready to transform this house.

What about you? Do you decorate for autumn or Halloween? How early do you start?

Posted Last Week

I posted my ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ review of Violet by Scott Thomas.

Finished Reading

Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary (Fablehaven #4) by Brandon Mull Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn The Bone Ships (The Tide Child #1) by R.J. Barker

Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary (Fablehaven #4) by Brandon Mull ⭐⭐⭐⭐★ - I'm still really enjoying my journey through the Fablehaven series with my son.

Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn ⭐⭐⭐★★ - Deep and Dark and Dangerous was my last selection for the LOHF Readathon. I enjoyed this. I'm kind of waffling between 3⭐ and 4⭐.

The Bone Ships (The Tide Child #1) by R.J. Barker [dnf] - I gave it 80 pages, and I just couldn't connect with it. I'm still not even sure what it's about. I seem to be alone in not loving this one. It's the struggle of do I make myself keep reading? I'm trying not to do that to myself.

Currently Reading

Keys to the Demon Prison (Fablehaven #5) by Brandon Mull

Keys to the Demon Prison (Fablehaven #5) by Brandon Mull - The last book of the original Fablehaven series!

Recent Acquisitions

Little Paranoias: Stories by Sonora Taylor A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab

Little Paranoias: Stories by Sonora Taylor - Sonora Taylor recently sent me her upcoming collection, and it's at the top of my TBR for October. I'm really looking forward to reading these stories.

Earlier this year I found a copy of A Gathering of Shadows (book #2 of the Shades of Magic series) at 2nd and Charles. How lucky am I to have just come across books #1 and #3 (A Darker Shade of Magic and A Conjuring of Light)? I love when the stars align. I can't wait to finally read this series!! Now to decide whether I should squeeze it in before the end of the year or read it early 2020...

So what about you? Let me know what you're reading this week or leave me some links!

  1. I'm excited to read The Bone Ships, but I have heard the last half is way better than the first half. I am trying to decide whether to DNF a review book that EVERYONE loves and I just can't stand (The Imaginary Corpse). So I get it!

    1. I'm still sad about the DNF. After hearing everyone praise the second half, I'm tempted to pick it back up, but it just wasn't working for me...

  4. I am not a big decorator, but I am glad there are people like you, who enjoy it, so that I can admire all your hard work and creativity. Awesome book finds. That's great that you were able to get all the books in the series. I read and really enjoyed ASOM and bought the second book, but it fell by the wayside. I need to do a catch up. Happy birthday to your husband!!!

  5. I decorate for autumn and Halloween! I am done. Lol. I put my stuff up this year on the equinox. :) Happy birthday to your husband!

I used to read all the Mary Downing Hahn books when I worked at the library! Now I am wistful about them, seeing this. I think I will have to check one out!

  6. Oooh you got the VE Schwab books! And no I don't decorate the house in October as Halloween is only quite recent (well twenty years mind you) here in Europe!

  7. I love the covers of the books you've mentioned; I haven't read any of them.

I don't really decorate our home anymore :-( I just got out of the habit, but I still love looking at all the decorations and paraphernalia for sale in the shops this time of year.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. Here's my Monthly Wrap Up - Sunday Post

  8. YESSSS I love Halloween! I haven't decorated yet because it is still 90+ degrees...very de-motivating for fall type decorating. :P But maybe I should anyway, maybe it would convince the weather gods to send us some season-appropriate weather here in Virginia...

    1. It stays pretty hot here, too. Somehow it managed to cool down for Halloween this year.

  9. I love Halloween too, although we haven't put up our decorations yet. I really need to read Victoria Schwab's Darker Shade of Magic Series soon!

  10. I love RJ Barker and I enjoyed the The Bone Ships overall, but even I have to admit it was kind of slow, especially the first half, so I'm not too surprised to hear you couldn't connect with it!

  12. We decorate a little, but not a lot, although I always get anxious to get some pumpkins and whatnot for the porch lol. It's gotta look a little autumny after all! I love all the October stuff.

Deep and Dark and Dangerous definitely looks interesting, I'll have to take a peek.

  14. I know how it is when a book that everyone but you loves just doesn't work. I'd set it aside for another try later if it were mine. That is what I did with A Darker Shade of Magic. I read a few pages then threw it back onto TBR mountain. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  15. I recently read A Darker Shade of Magic, and I recommend starting the series as soon as possible! It was very good, and I need to make space in my reading schedule for A Gathering of Shadows. I bought the Fablehaven series for my stepson, but have yet to start reading them. He's read and liked the first two, so I need to catch up!
