Recent Updates and Currently Reading | March 29

How is your reading these days? It has been a struggle for me especially this past week. I was finally in the mood to read yesterday, and it was nice to spend a whole afternoon and evening getting lost in books.

Please let me know how you are doing. My kids' online school started this past week, and I transitioned to work from home (as did my husband later in the week). It's constant chaos and stress, but I feel extremely fortunate.

I wasn't able to post an update last weekend so today's post will cover the last couple of weeks.

Finished Reading

The Bone Weaver's Orchard by Sarah Read ⭐⭐⭐⭐★ - This was an adult horror with a young adult atmosphere.

Fluent Forever by Gabriel Wyner ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I was glad to finally read this. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning another language.

The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo ⭐⭐⭐⭐★ - This was a beautiful book. If all goes well, I'll have a review out tomorrow.

Little Darlings by Melanie Golding ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I normally avoid child related horrors, but this is a Ladies of Horror Fiction favorite, and I was reassured I would be OK. (I loved it!)

Lumberjanes: Up All Night (Lumberjanes #1) by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, Shannon Watters, Brooke A. Allen (Illustrator) ⭐⭐⭐⭐★ - I'm hooked on Lumberjanes!

All 4 and 5 ⭐s!

Currently Reading

I think I'm going to start reading Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall later today.

Recent Acquisitions

Many thanks to Orbit for sending me a copy of The Book of Koli by M.R. Carey! I'm really, really excited to read this one.

Many thanks to Tor.com for sending me Night of the Mannequins by Stephen Graham Jones. I'm really excited for this one as well!

And thank you to Steve Stred for gifting me his new middle grade release The Boy Whose Room was Outside!

So what about you? Let me know what you're reading this week or leave me some links!

  1. I've definitely been struggling to read, too. It seems impossible to concentrate. So I finally picked up a couple books that are total escapism that I don't have to think to hard about. LOL Seems to be doing the trick! :)

  2. Good luck with your full time job and teaching your kids. It's the one time my masters degree would have come in handy, but I have no young children to educate. NJ is turning into a hot spot. I am lucky my company is putting me on emergency leave. I am essential and cannot work from home, but my dad, who I live with is high risk (had lung cancer 2 years ago, lost about 3/4 one lung, and is immuo compromised.) I only go out to get my parents food and meds. It's good to see that corona has not robbed you of your reading mojo. Nothing under 4 stars is a fabulous week!

  3. I'm glad working from home, and learning from home is working well for your family, Jennifer :)
It's a little hard for me to keep up the same rhythm when teaching from home.
Have a wonderful week ahead and stay healthy and safe.

  4. I read Lumberjanes :D Aww I miss my library :/

Ack, I can't work from home, though I do want to tell them that hey I can work from home and get paid for taking care of my own kid, win win ;)

  5. I've been a picky moody reader but since I love a lot of genres I'm doing ok. We've been on spring break (at home) and will just be getting back to things. My daughter hasn't been out since March 16 and I haven't except for a drivethru pharmacy run last week. I hope we get into more of a routine this week.

Stay healthy, safe and happy reading!

  7. Constant chaos and stress: yes! My husband and I are working from home and my daughter is doing college from home and feeling deeply disappointed, and the dog is underfoot, and I'm living in the US epicenter of Coronavirus and ... it's a lot. But I have it a lot easier than those who have to go to work in risky situations every day, and I try to remember that as best I can.
I'm trying to read, but it's kind of difficult to concentrate....

  8. I've had a week much like your own with settling into working from home, home schooling and struggling to read! Hopefully, this week will be a better, more settled, one!

  9. I am finding it harder to get a lot of reading done. My college age daughter is back home so the house feels busier. I have done some work at home and some in the office. I am not sure what the future holds. I am glad you were able to get some reading in. I hope you have a great week. Stay safe!

  10. Glad you're able to be home. I am as well although my wife is considered essential and has to go in, so we worry about that a bit. It is an adjustment for sure. My reading has been really down but I'm hoping to get through at least one book this week hopefully.

I liked the first Lumberjanes, I need to get back into that series.

  11. I mostly read PNR these days and have found some really good books to read lately so I'm keeping busy with books. Thankfully things here are good for now. I hope this entire mess gets better soon. Things are a little too crazy for me right now.

    Happy reading! :)

  13. My reading has improved these last view weeks. Although the world is really distracting at the moment.. I seem to be able to concentrate on my books quiet good. I'm lucky I guess.
I'm glad you're able to work from home. And hopefully your reading will improve. ;)
    Stay safe and happy reading.
