Recent Updates and Currently Reading | June 25

Hello, friends! I hope you all are having an excellent weekend. We have had a weekend full of fun. ❤️ Friday we went to play virtual sports which was a blast. It's basically sports video games on a movie screen where you are actually hitting golf balls or throwing baseballs, footballs, dodgeballs, etc. into the screen. Our favorite was playing dodgeball against zombies. 😆 Then we spent most of yesterday at the pool.

My 14yo and I are playing a game called Subnautica. I cannot explain why it's so scary. 😆 "Descend into the depths of an alien underwater world filled with wonder and peril. Craft equipment, pilot submarines and out-smart wildlife to explore lush coral reefs, volcanoes, cave systems, and more - all while trying to survive." It's so much fun, but you truly get that feeling like you are going to run out of air or get attacked by the creatures of the vast deep. The good news is if you die, you just respawn lol.

Have you/are you posting the Mid-Year Freak Out Tag this month? If so - can you please send me your link? You can just pop your link into my comments here or anywhere or email me? I just really want to see what everyone is loving right now! I may try to round them all up into a post to share ❤️📚 (Here's my post from last year if you need the questions. I didn't start this tag, but I love it.)

Finished Reading

Night's Edge by Liz Kerin Below by Laurel Hightower

Night's Edge by Liz Kerin - This is both a dnf and a recommendation. Night's Edge is fun and interesting and well written. It's like a zombie apocalypse book, but the plague is vampires. I'm in a terrible headspace right now and there's a lot of blood and some scenes aren't leaving my head which will absolutely appeal to the right horror readers. I'm just not that reader at the moment, and my review won't gain anything by me continuing to read it. If a mother/daughter vampire plague novel sounds like a book you need, pick this one up!

Below by Laurel Hightower ⭐⭐⭐⭐★ - I enjoyed this one, and it was a quick read which is perfect for me right now. Review soon!

Currently Reading

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern - After dnf'ing two books in a row last week, I threw out the entire TBR and started listening to this from my library. I think I'm going to love it.

What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall - This was another pick out of my TBR jar. All of my green papers are 2023 purchases, and I'm so glad I pulled What Lies in the Woods! I love Kate Alice Marshall's books so much.

Added to the TBR

She Started It by Sian Gilbert

She Started It by Sian Gilbert - This was my June Book of the Month pick. I don't know much about it, but it sounded good when I picked it!

This post is being shared as part of The Sunday Salon at Readerbuzz, Book Date’s It's Monday! What Are You Reading? and Caffeinated Book Reviewer's The Sunday Post.

  1. The Mid Year Freak Out tag is one of my favorite posts of the year! I'll probably post mine next week. I'm looking forward to reading yours😁

  2. I would have to pass on Subnautica at the moment. Eek! She Started It was my BOTM pick too. Hopefully I'll get to it by end of summer. What Lies in the Woods was also a BOTM pick for me. I really should catch up before getting more, but they're so tempting! Have a wonderful week.

  3. What Lies in the Woods sounds excellent.

And I would be freaked out played Subnautica too, especially in light of recent news. Honestly though, deep underwater stuff and space stuff really freaks me out in general!

  4. That sounds like an excellent game, but I find anything to do with the ocean, the deep sea or especially alien oceans just to be scary and creepy.

  5. Thanks for the reminder to do the mid-year freak out. I am surprised I have not seen any yet. Hmmm. How fun that you and your kid are playing a game together. That's Animal Crossing for me and mine. Virtual sports sounds like lots of fun and nice alternative when it's hot out.

  6. Given the recent tragedy, it’s understandable the game is a little scary. Virtual sports sounds fun though.

Wishing you a great reading week

  10. Playing virtual dodgeball against zombies sounds like a blast! And I've heard really good things about What Lies in the Woods. And I read the Starless Sea earlier and liked several things about it, but didn't end up loving it. I'm very curious to hear your thoughts on it. Have a good week! :D

  11. My daughter does a bunch of gaming but it's never been my thing. I am shocked the year is half over. So much to do yet. So much to read.

  12. Subnautica looks fun and I even listen to the music from the game occasionally- there's an ambient video. Aquamarine is another one although I think it's simpler, and pixel art based...

  13. The gaming sounds fun and I'm glad you DNF'ed when Night's Edge wasn't working for you. I plan on picking it up soon. I read Below when it first came out and enjoyed it.

I need to take a little time and do the Mid-Year Freak Out Tag. I saw a couple of people had posted theirs.

  16. Yayyy the Mid Year Book Freak Out! I was thinking it was about time for that one to pop up.

Subnautica sounds perfectly creepy in light of the sad creepy Titan news.
I'm so out of touch with the gaming world I wouldn't even know how to get started with a game or if my laptop has the system requirements for games. I don't have an XBox or Playstation or any of those gaming contraptions. lol

  17. I'd really love to throw some dodgeballs at zombies!

  18. Subnautica terrifies me lol!! I have thalassophobia and can't even watch others play it. 🙈 I can't wait to hear your thoughts on What Lies in the Woods! I loved it!
