Storybook Sunday | Charlotte's Web by E. B. White

My kids and I started reading Charlotte's Web out loud together last week. I have always loved Charlotte's Web, and so far my kids are captivated. The possible death of a baby pig was a great hook. My kids wanted to rid the world of injustice right along with Fern. I saw Charlotte's Web was just named the number 10 best book of all time by Entertainment Weekly*. I'm not sure I would go that far, but it was nice to see it on the list. It has a lot of awesome qualities I'm happy to be revisiting.

Other Books We Read Last Week

My kids love Pete the Cat so we bought the new Pete at the Beach by James Dean. It has been a big hit at our house.

I am not a fan of Oswald. I just don't get it, but the Oswald books are actually pretty great for early reading. They have a lot of sight words so my oldest can read these with confidence. This particular book is Hooray for Fall. My kids love that there is a monster reference in this one. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

*More About the Entertainment Weekly 100 Greatest Books of All Time

I was hoping EW would have their 100 Greatest Books of All Time list online so I could share it, but they only have the top 10 list on their site so far. I also found their explanation on how they chose the top 100 books. Apparently I was not the only person wondering how on earth they picked the books the picked. They got a "landslide of mail" asking that very question. I love that they explained and even admitted "to some super-nefarious backroom dealings".

"You can’t please all the people all the time, but it turns out you can annoy a whole bunch of them."

We booknerds are an opinionated bunch.

Are you reading any kids books this week? What do you think of Entertainment Weekly's top 10 greatest books of all time?

    1. It's a great issue. It has the greatest movies, tv, music, etc. as well as books.

  2. I'd like to see the 100. I've read all the 10, mostly in the past. There are some I really do love, like Charlotte's Web. These lists are funny sometimes, and often different! Glad to hear about the new Pete The Cat-didn't know! They are so loved by the younger kids. I don't know the Oswald books-will look for one to see what I think. Thanks for the new info!

    1. My little ones love all of the Pete the Cat books. My kids used to watch Oswald on Noggin/Nick Jr. The books are much better, imo.

  3. Wow. I don't know that you can really make a list of just 10 books of all kinds that are the best! I do love Charlotte's Web, but probably liked Trumpet of the Swan even more when I was in 4th grade. I'll have to look at the whole list when it's available.

    1. I don't think I know Trumpet of the Swan! I'm definitely going to look that one up in just a minute. The whole list was published in the print magazine, but they will probably publish it online eventually.

    2. Oh, how sweet. I didn't realize it was an E.B. White book. That sounds adorable.

  4. Wow, Charlotte's Web is #1?? Shocking! I loved that book so I'm not disagreeing, but I'm not sure it's wholly deserving of the #1 spot. Interested to see what else makes the list... I saw another top 100 list recently "From Zero to Well-Read in 100 Books" (http://bookriot.com/2013/06/13/from-zero-to-well-read-in-100-books/) and was shocked to find several newer books on there (Gone Girl was an interesting pick) but Fifty Shades of Grey being one I don't quite agree with (at all). I'm always skeptical about these 'lists' but am such a sucker to try and read them anyways. :)

    1. Hehe. Charlotte's Web was #10. I absolutely love book lists so thank you for posting that link! Wow... Fifty Shades, huh? Not the first book I think of when I hear the phrase "well read", but maybe they were going for something in particular.

  5. Thanks for posting this. As I read their explanation for how the books were picked, I realized it was a bit random. If certain people shouted loudly enough, it seems their books got on the list, based on the description. I do like several of those top ten, but there are a few that I thought, "Eh."

    Happy reading this week. :)
