Recent Updates and Currently Reading | October 7

I hope everyone has been able to embrace the spooky side of October this week. Every October I get in the mood for short stories, and I have a feeling Lovecraft is going to be taking over most of my short story time this month.

I got some Halloween decorating done this week. Hopefully I can get some more done before the holiday flies by. Sometimes I consider just leaving it out all year...

Read Last Week

You can read my full review of The Blackbird Season here. The characters kept me from connecting to and enjoying that one.

I loved The Thing on the Doorstep (review). It's my favorite Lovecraft story so far.

The Call of Cthulhu, on the other hand, is not one of my favorites (review).

I also read Joe Lansdale's A Fine Dark Line. A Fine Dark Line is very similar to both The Bottoms and Edge of Dark Water. Of those three, A Fine Dark Line is the weakest, but I really enjoy Lansdale so I was happy to have read it.

The Devil and the Deep: Horror Stories of the Sea edited by Ellen Datlow

There's no cover yet for The Devil and the Deep, but it's an original anthology of horror set in the deep blue sea with new stories from Seanan McGuire, Christopher Golden, Stephen Graham Jones, and others.

Current Distractions

I'm embracing Riverdale this week. There are so many "unlikable" characters and yet I root for and care about every one of them.

My husband and I also started watching True Detective. I promise this is pure coincidence and not a cry for a Lovecraft intervention.

So what about you? Let me know what you're reading (or watching) this week or leave me some links!

  1. Wow, you read 4 books in a week? That's an achievement for me. I can hardly finish one :D Have a great weekend!

    1. It's a little misleading. I finished The Blackbird Season after I posted my update last weekend. The Lovecraft stories were only 40 and 54 pages long (although The Call of Cthulhu did take me a while to read). :)

  2. Aha! Someone else who has gotten sucked in by Riverdale. I loved it so much and the new ones start this week. Jughead is my fave! You got a lot of reading done this week so that is great. I'm stuck on a book tour book I"m not enjoying very much. Hope to finish it after my very busy Saturday! Have a great week. And BTW, most of my Halloween decorations stay up through Thanksgiving -

    1. Season 2 starts this week? That's awesome! I love Jughead, too. :)

I'm sooo sorry you are stuck on a book tour book. I've gotten to the point where I refuse to do book tours of any kind.

I hope you have a great week, too. I do have some stuff that will stay out through Thanksgiving. I need more Thanksgiving things to put out after Halloween. I think that would help with the post-October depression.

  3. Riverdale is freakishly addicting, isn't it? It's driving me nuts.

    1. I'm a bit surprised by it. I'm glad to hear season 2 is here so I'll have more to watch.

  4. We should do that today--decorate for Halloween. My daughter had to miss her soccer game this morning because she's still sick, but she probably wouldn't mind decorating. I think Halloween is her favorite holiday, with Christmas coming in at a close second.

The Devil and the Deep sounds like a good one. Horror stories on the sea . . . I can get into that. :-) I haven't had a chance to see Riverdale yet, but I would like to.

I hope you have a great week, Jen!

    1. Aw, I'm sorry she's sick, Wendy. I bet some Halloween decorating would help cheer her up! My oldest son loves Halloween about as much as he loves Christmas, too.

I hope you have a great week, too!

  5. I just finished The Blackbird Season. I agree, the characters were all ughhhhh...but I was more annoyed at the fact that the death of the birds led to absolutely nothing. I though that incident would play a bigger role in the story! And I was disappointed that it wasn't as mysterious and suspenseful as I thought it would be. But oh well, at least it was a super fast read!

    1. I think the birds were there to add the mystery but that only made it worse because it didn't pan out into anything. Yes, at least it was a quick read. :)

  6. I tried watching the first season of True Detective but only lasted one episode before giving up on it!

    1. I'm only a few episodes in now, and it hasn't changed much from the first episode so that may have been a good call for you.

  7. I can see you're reading a lot of Halloween themed stuff :) I should get to it too! Although I have such a lineup or ARCs I can't really do that -.- oh well!
    Have a great week :)

    1. That's one of the main reasons I don't accept many ARCs. Hopefully you have a darker book in your pile you can get to this month. :)

  8. My brother is a huge fan of Lovecraft! I have never read him although I keep meaning too since my bro is all things Lovecraftian. Maybe I will start with the Thing on the Doorstep since it is a short story. :)

I can't wait for Riverdale either!

    1. If you decide to read some Lovecraft, please let me know what you think! I would love to hear it. So far the shorter the better with Lovecraft. I don't know if that will continue to hold true, but so far it seems to be the case.

    1. I'm not sure where else to catch up on Riverdale if you don't have Netflix. If do have Netflix, though, that's how I'm catching up right now.

  11. With decorations it seems like as a kid it FELT like a year since the last holiday, Halloween or whatever- but now yeah it feels like we just put 'em away and it's time again. Like last month or something lol.

I've got a few spooky reads lined up, hope they're good. And yay for Riverdale being back- pretty excited about that.

    1. I can't believe how far it felt between Thanksgiving and Christmas as a kid! Those two holidays were so far apart. LOL. It seems so strange now.

  12. Enjoy your scary reading. I always admire how you people in the USA have such amazing decorations for October and Halloween. I have to admit these days I don't even decorate much at Christmas. Lazy!

    1. Thanks, Kathryn. We do go pretty crazy here with the Halloween decor. I love it! :) It's a lot of work putting it up and it's even worse taking it down.

  13. Tell us about your Halloween decorations! My little girl keeps asking if we can put some up and I'm not sure where to start.

    1. I try to focus as much as I can on the kids' stuff at the beginning of the month. Halloween countdown, candelabras, little fall/halloween decor things like baskets and boxes and pumpkins. I change out everything in their bathroom. They have a skeleton shower curtain, black rugs, black towels... I live on the gulf coast so it's still hot this time of year. We always have to mow the yard in October so I don't really get to put much outside until closer to the end of the month because I would have to take it all up to mow. :( We have a lot of halloween pillows that go on the couch and in the kids rooms and some halloween throw blankets. Those are always easy things to put out first. Maybe you guys could get some of those!
