Top Ten Creatures I Want to See in Creature Features

Top Ten Tuesday is a feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

For this week's Top Ten Tuesday, I'm joining in on Scifi and Scary's topic of Top Ten Creatures I Want to See in Creature Features. As much as I love creature features, I definitely haven’t read enough of them. Be sure to let me know if there are any books that will fill these cravings:

Crustaceans

I’m probably craving some crustacean horror due to the Clickers: Forever tribute, but I’ve also had the lobstrocities from The Dark Tower on my mind lately. One thing I know for sure, I love for my creatures to come from the sea.

Plants

I know you guys can help me with this one! I loved Scott Smith’s The Ruins. I think the only other book I’ve read with plant horror (that wasn’t related to fungus/cordyceps) is Goosebumps #2. I need more plant horror.

Mutated Monsters

I would love more monsters like the ones in Relic, Watchers, and Annihilation (the movie, let’s be honest).

Ladybugs

Does this exist?! A couple of years ago local ladybugs were clinging to the inside of dogs’ mouths and wreaking havoc. I need a creature feature about a bug with less than 8 legs. Not your average roach, but ladybugs or grasshoppers. Give me something to start side-eyeing the cute ones.

Sea Monsters

This is a blanket statement for monsters of the sea. I will take them all.

Weather

I want more horror books where the creatures comes from within the weather. I don't just want books set in bad weather. Give me books where there are creatures in the weather!

Aliens

I need more alien horror like Stinger, The Border, and Dreamcatcher.

Mutated Men

I specifically want creatures like the Morlocks in The Time Machine and the creatures in The Descent that have mutated to live in the dark. Those are some of the best creatures to discover!

Ancient Evil

I want more creatures that have been around longer than we have.

Talk to me about creature features! What creatures would you like to see in creature features?

  1. I love the idea of creatures in winter weather. I love winter settings and creepy things in it make it all the more exciting. I'd also be really interested in ladybug horror! I remember when they were attaching to dogs mouths. We managed to avoid that but it was pretty scary. Love the take on this week's topic.

  2. I can't think of any books to add to your list, but the ones you've already thought of sure sound good.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

  3. I can help you with a few of these! Try SEED ME by Konn Lavery for plant-based horror. For sea creature features, try INFESTATION by William Meikle.

  4. Yes to all of the above! Killer ladybirds (as we call ladybugs)would be fun but any kind of nasty insect thing would be good. I love my sea monsters and the idea of winter specific monsters means more good snow related horror. There is a Hunter Shea fungus book coming out in November.

  5. I’d like a book that makes me look at a cute little bug in a new light.

  7. I'm with you on creatures in the weather! I want more of those, too. And monsters from the deep (caves or ocean). :)

  9. "crustacean horror" lol that just sounds awesome. I may have to see what the Clicker stuff is about. And yes what is it about aquatic monsters? I love to imagine something rising from the depths. Have you read World of Water by James Lovegrove? It's more sci-fi than horror, but it's on a water planet and there are monsters, and it was pretty good. Anyway... oh my gosh Poseidon's Children, I am off to check that one out NEXT. Yes to that.

Plant horror's kinda cool too. I've been wanting to read Day of the Triffids (fraked me out as a kid) and I just read Annihilatiion (that's kinda freaky too). The Ruins sounds awesome.

Yes to weather. I love the idea of creatures in a snowstorm or stalking through a blizzard! Or elementals- creatures comprised OF the elements. I love the old Time Machine movie with the Morlocks. and ancient evil *nods* like the snake people of Robert E. Howard. Love this post- so many ideas!!

  10. You're definitely better read than me in horror, so I don't know if I can think of anything to recommend, but I'm definitely taking notes from you with this post!

  11. Another fantastic list! I can just create my horror tbr off of your lists! It's fabulous. I'm thinking of reading The Ruins this summer. I saw and loved the movie, before I realized it was a book. Can't wait.

As for the ladybugs, I read a thing that said that they aren't technically ladybugs but Asian Lady Beetles. Close enough for government work though, considering they're extremely similar. The Asian kind are the sort that can harm pups though.

Most books on Asian beetles look a little, um... not great. I don't think I'm going to go spending my money on any of them, that's for sure. I can only imagine the horror story for that one though. Innocent looking little bug eats family dog :( !!!
