Recent Updates and Currently Reading | January 6

Happy New Year everyone! I hope your first book of the year was amazing. I DNFed my first book, and I'm choosing to take that as a good sign. Many of us can probably all stand to be better about putting down books that aren't working for us so I'm OK with starting the new year that way.

Posted Last Week

You can tell I was off of work last week since I was actually managing to post on the blog! My goal for this year is consistency.

Here are all of the January releases I am anxious to read: Upcoming January 2019 Book Releases in Fantasy, Horror, and Science Fiction

I wrote a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ review for The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson.

I also shared all of the books that went into my TBR jar for 2019. I didn't put this in my post, but be sure to let me know if you want to read any of my TBR books with me! I had a few people ask for buddy reads when I shared by list on twitter, and I'd love to add you in.

Finished Reading

Ghost Story by Peter Straub ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - This may have suffered a little since I tried to read it over the holidays. It was a really great read, though.

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I really enjoyed this one as well!

Currently Reading

Exploring Dark Short Fiction #2: A Primer to Kaaron Warren edited by Eric J. Guignard - I'm enjoying the heck out of Kaaron Warren's writing.

Carrie by Stephen King - This buddy read starts tomorrow (Monday) if you want to join! I'm reading Carrie with Lilyn, Tracy, Suzy, and Catherine. (Sorry if I forgot anyone! I need to double check today who all is in for this one.)

Recent Acquisitions

The Shining Girls by Lauren Buekes - I've never read Lauren Buekes, and I'm hoping to change that this year. Hopefully, I can manage to read a lot of female horror writers during Women in Horror Month in February.

The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks - I'm hoping to read a lot more thrillers this year! *fingers crossed*

The Passenger by Lisa Lutz - The same for this one!

So what about you? Let me know what you're reading this week or leave me some links!

This post is being shared as part of Book Date's It's Monday! What Are You Reading? and Caffeinated Book Reviewer's The Sunday Post.

  1. Do you know I just googled Ghost Story. I saw the movie when I was very young (the 80s), and it is actually based on the book you read. I had no idea.

  2. Happy New Year! And good luck with your TBR jar! I just read The Hobbit recently and it was a lot of fun to revisit.

The Wife Between Us looks good- I read a lot of thrillers in 2018 and loved it, so I'll probably continue that trend this year! And I'd be interested to see what you think of The Passenger, as I've read that one. I've never seen a ton of reviews for it.

    1. I did not get along with The Hobbit as a kid, but there's hope now! Haha. Thanks!

  3. I love the idea of a TBR jar! I'm going to try and make a real effort on my unread books this year as it makes me sad to see them just sitting there.
Hope Carrie is good. It's one of the few horror films I've watched, but not read the book

  5. I always thought Carrie was one of King's best. Years since I read it though! I'm hoping for a LOT of DNFs this year to help reduce the TBR!

  6. I've never read Carrie. It seems to be one of the few I've skipped and keep meaning to go back to it but haven't. Hope you enjoy it!

  7. Carrie was one of my favourite reads from last year - it has it's flaws, but the way its written is really clever, almost like a book version of a found footage film.
I really want to read Every Heart a Doorway - it's a good sign if you liked it!

  8. Good luck with posting consistently and your TBR jar! I thought about using a TBR jar, but all of my unread books are on 1 shelf, so I just pick a random number and count along the shelf.

Aj @ Read All The Things!

    1. For some reason I didn't realize An Anonymous Girl was by the same authors. Thanks!

  10. Good luck with the TBR jar. I have more of a list since I can be a mood reader and would need to get the genre I want. So I have my shelfs by genre and other criteria to make it easy to pick what I want. Enjoy your reads! Anne - Books of My Heart

    1. I'm a mood reader, too. I allow myself to put it back in the jar once in case I'm not ready for it. :)
