Recent Updates and Currently Reading | August 14

We were back to school this week. It feels like it came out of nowhere this year. I'm not sure where the summers are going, but part of it is just the simple fact that they go back to school so early now. We had our first cross country meet of the year yesterday. My son had to be on the bus by 4:15am, and then we traveled to watch his first race.

I have a question for back to school moms. Do you have any favorite go to tips, tricks, snacks, meals for lunches? My kids ate at school a lot last year because the district still had covid money and didn't charge for meals. All of that has ended and lunches are way too expensive for mediocre food (as my son's computer science teacher delicately put it!) I'd like to give them some variety, and I worry about them eating enough being so active all day.

Finished Reading

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr Paper Girls, Volume 2 by Brian K. Vaughan

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr ⭐⭐⭐★★ - I am hoping to have a full review up this week. I think this book is great for the right audience.

Paper Girls, Volume 2 by Brian K. Vaughan ⭐⭐⭐⭐★ - I'm having a lot of fun with this series. I'm hoping to start the show soon.

Currently Reading

The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson - The Alloy of Law is Mistborn #4 (the first book in era 2 of Mistborn). I'm loving it. I'm hoping to read one a month until the final book of era 2 is released in November.

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson - You might remember I just read this in 2021. It took me all year. I don't know why I had such a strong desire this week to read it again, but I'm giving into my moods this year.

Added to the TBR

These Fleeting Shadows by Kate Alice Marshall Gunmetal Gods by Zamil Akhtar Conqueror's Blood by Zamil Akhtar
The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams The Bitter Twins by Jen Williams The Poison Song by Jen Williams

These Fleeting Shadows by Kate Alice Marshall - Yay! I love Kate Alice Marshall so much. This was a preorder, and I can't wait to read it!

Gunmetal Gods and Conqueror's Blood by Zamil Akhtar - I've been hearing such great things about these books so I grabbed the audiobooks to check them out.

I couldn't resist the ebook sale for the The Winnowing Flame Trilogy (The Ninth Rain, The Bitter Twins, The Poison Song) by Jen Williams. I love these covers so much, I'd still love to own them in hard copy some day, but I may just have to read them first and buy them if I love them.

  1. That's an early bus time for a meet. I don't remember ever getting to school at that time for a race. Hope it went well. Good luck finding good lunch options. I meal prep for work (and don't like to heat food at work). I found a lot of great options on Pinterest.

    1. It's so hot here. I think that's why they race so early. Their warm up was at 6:30am with the first race at 7:30am. It makes travel time really, really early.

  2. School does seem like it's come out of nowhere, doesn't it? I don't have kids in school, but I'm starting a new semester next Monday and I'm so not ready, lol.

  3. I can't believe how early kids go back to school now. Mid August? I would have been pissed as a kid lol.

I'm pretty tempted to try Paper Girls after watching the show. I think I did read the first one (or part of it) a few years ago but I forgot most of it...

  4. Our school district is giving all the kids free lunch again this year so my grandson is set. But when my daughter was in school I made her the usual sandwich, bag of chips, piece of fruit and a drink.

    1. I'm glad your grandson will still get fed! That's pretty much where we are with lunch.

  5. I'm not a Mom, but when I was in school I packed a sandwich, bag of chips and a junky treat like a Ding Dong, Twinkie, or Hunts Pudding Cup. Kids today eat so much more healthily. lol

    1. Some things are timeless! Our lunches aren't really that far off.

  6. I wish schools would go to year-round schools with a few weeks break every nine weeks. It's too big of a shock to be off for such a long time and then to resume going to school.

I wish I had some good ideas for lunches. My sons liked yogurt and fruit for lunches.

I look forward to your review of Cloud Cuckoo Land.

    1. I would be fine with that! My work has this horrible summer schedule that makes the hours longer, and it feels like I have less time with my kids in the summer. :( School schedules and work weeks all need an overhaul.

  12. Minnesota passed a law many, many years ago that prevents school from starting until after Labor Day. That seems right to me even though it means school doesn't have many breaks since most try to dismiss for the summer soon after Memorial Day and need to put in about 180 days. School lunches at the district I worked for were excellent and used a lot of locally grown or produced items. They also served breakfast and brunch to keep kids fed through long, busy days. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  13. Ah, a Sanderson marathon is always good! I'm also curious to hear what you think of the Paper Girls show when you get a chance to watch it. I finished it and had some mixed feelings, since the tone of it kind of changed near the middle and I'm not sure what to think of the cliffhanger ending yet.

  14. Wow, that's an early start to the day!

I'm not familiar with those Jen Williams books at all, but the covers are really intriguing. I'll have to look them up. And as for mood reading, I'm all for it.

    Have a great week!
