Recent Updates and Currently Reading | August 19

I'm so sad that summer is winding down! My kids went back to school this past week, and now it's back to business for all of us. I hope everyone is having a great end of summer. Are you doing any last minute summer send off activities?

Posted Last Week

Last week I posted my ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 review of I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara. I also listened to the I'll Be Gone in the Dark podcast this week. I highly recommend that as well. If you have any more recommendations regarding the Golden State Killer case/I'll Be Gone in the Dark, please let me know.

Finished Reading

Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury ⭐⭐💫 - Unfortunately, I didn't love Dandelion Wine like I thought I would. There were enough wonderful moments that I'm glad I read it, but it's not one that I will revisit.

The Sky Woman by J.D. Moyer ⭐ - The Sky Woman didn't work for me. I will likely have a review out for this one sometime this week.

Currently Reading

The Siren and the Specter by Jonathan Janz - I'm still reading (and really enjoying!) The Siren and the Specter. The other two books I finished this week were both buddy reads, so they took priority over this one. I'm happy to report The Siren and the Specter is successfully giving me the creeps.

Baal by Robert R. McCammon - Baal is one of McCammon's books that I have not read yet. I'm loving it!

Recent Acquisitions

The Exes' Revenge by Jo Jakeman - Thank you to folks at Berkley/Penguin Random House for sending me The Exes' Revenge. There has been a noticeable lack of thrillers in my life this year. I'm kind of in the mood to go on a spree soon.

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer - I've been wishing after this one for a while now so I was excited to come across this weekend. "Into Thin Air is the definitive account of the deadliest season in the history of Everest by the acclaimed Outside journalist and author of the bestselling Into the Wild. Taking the reader step by step from Katmandu to the mountain's deadly pinnacle, Krakauer has his readers shaking on the edge of their seat."

Corpse Cold: New American Folklore by John Brhel and Joseph Sullivan - Corpse Cold was a recent Kindle purchase. I've heard great things about it, and I'm in the mood for some folklore stories heading into fall.

So what about you? Let me know what you're reading this week or leave me some links!

    1. I love the other Bradbury stories I have read. I enjoyed Dandelion Wine, too, but it was the style of book that doesn't have a plot.

  4. I’m glad summer is coming to an end because of the heat and how busy we are but I’ll miss the longer days reading by my pool. Too bad Dandelion Wine was no good. I wanted to try it but I guess I won’t.

    1. Reading by the pool is a big plus for summer. You might enjoy Dandelion Wine. There were some really great moments, it just has no plot.

  8. Sorry the buddy reads didn't pan out (book wise) but glad the current ones are great. I grabbed Corpse Cold for free a few weeks back and considered myself highly lucky. I'm reading a fluffy dog book now (can't handle any heavy reads but that's another story) and also half way through In the Mouth of the Dark - weird!

  10. School starts here week after next. I feel for everyone who has started already- it feels too soon? And while I'm over the heat, it is always sad when summer passes. It's so long til the next one lol!

That's a bummer about Dandelion wine and The Sky Woman. :(

The Exes' Revenge looks promising- -I've been reading a ton of thrillers this year and loving them!

  11. I’m on a waitlist for I’ll Be Gone In The Dark, but I’m getting impatient. I want it now. I’ve heard good things about the book and the podcast. I hope you enjoy your new books! I read Into Thin Air when I was a teenager. I don’t remember it very well.

  12. School doesn't start until after the holiday in the northeast, but as this is the first year my own child will not be returning to any sort of school (she finished grad school in the fall), it is the first time it is a non-event for me. So strange. Good luck with the new school year.

  13. It is certainly not summer here with a change in the temperatures especially at night. I don't mind that and I'm pleased that the heatwave is a distant memory. I just hope it doesn't come back! I don't have kids or anything so I don't have to worry about back to school stuff!

  14. haha I also didn't end up caring too much for Dandelion Wine. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't what I expected. Another McCammon! You love him so much, tell me, what should be my first of his?

    1. Sorry you didn't care for Dandelion Wine either. You have Swan Song right? Start with that one! It's a chunky one, but it dark/beautiful/hopeful. :)

    1. I've loved his others works that I've read (which hasn't been many). This one just didn't have any plot so it was difficult to love as much as I wanted.

  18. Oh wow, I don't think I ever read Baal either! Chances are I have a copy somewhere, though😉 Yeah, our school district started school last week, although both my kids are done with high school so it feels so weird not "going back to school"!
