Recent Updates and Currently Reading | August 6

I just learned you can pin posts to the top row of your Instagram page. Did you know? I'm sure this is Instagram 101, but I'm terrible at Instagram 😂

Instagram Grid

You can follow me on Instagram if you want more proof!

Seriously, though, I'd love to use Instagram more, but it's such a struggle. My feed seems to only be reels and sponsored posts that aren't even about books. It's kind of miserable. But I enjoy scrolling back and looking at what I've read so I'm trying to get in the habit of using it more.

Currently Reading

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr - Cloud Cuckoo Land was my pick for this month's book club. I'm starting to love it. I was worried at first due to all of the POVs and the sprawling timeline, but I have high hopes for this one. I just need to figure out how to squeeze in 600+ pages this weekend 😆

Added to the TBR

Mister Slaughter by Robert McCammon The Providence Rider by Robert McCammon The River of Souls by Robert McCammon
Freedom of the Mask by Robert McCammon Cardinal Black by Robert McCammon Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney

Mister Slaughter, The Providence Rider, The River of Souls, Freedom of the Mask, and Cardinal Black by Robert McCammon are all finally available in trade paperback editions so I had to order them! I'm hoping to finally catch up on the Matthew Corbett series. These are books #3-7.

Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney - I was keeping my fingers and toes crossed that Daisy Darker would be a selection for the August Book of the Month box, and it was! I enjoyed Feeney's Rock Paper Scissors, but more importantly the reviews for Daisy Darker have been so great. I'm looking forward to reading it!

  1. Truth about IG. It seems like everyone does reels now. I miss the picture days. I have no skill for that medium, so good for you get some pictures up there.

    1. I miss the picture days, too. It's hard to scroll through IG.

  2. I love Instagram ever since I figured out you can snooze sponsored posts. It changed my life! Lol. I was seeing so many weird posts and ads. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Daisy Darker😁

    1. Thank you! I have snoozed the ads - I think that will help!!

  3. I'm the same with Instagram. I love it in theory but I've kinda neglected mine lately- I don't really get reels lol.

Ooh I just finished PAper Girls on Netflix. Enjoy!

    Daisy Darker sounds fab.

    1. I don't get reels either, and I never have my sound on when I'm scrolling IG. It's a picture app? lol

  4. If it makes you feel any better, I didn't know you could pin posts on Instagram. Or snooze sponsored posts. Must look into that one.

  5. I really liked the first volume of PaperGirls. This reminds me that I wanted to check the price for the second volume. I add the TV adaptation to my watchlist and watched the intro. Looks promising.

Instagram: you could try adding some promising hashtags to your feed, so you get to see more books. Or find likeminded readers and follow them…

  6. I look at Instagram but never post myself. I gave up on it ages ago. The shift to reels and stories is disappointing, but based on the latest comments form them, they don't plan to change it. :(

  7. When I first got on Instagram, I was planning to put up a photo for all my blog posts. Well, that last about a week!

I loaned my brother Cloud Cuckoo Land and he made a chart for himself to help him with the shifting point-of-views! I was so impressed.

    Have a great week, Jennifer!

  8. I am so over the reels thing on IG. I wish it would go back to the photo format over reels.

    Daisy Darker looks good!

  9. Instagram constantly surprises me! I try to keep up with the algorithm but it is depressing 😂 I don't do reels so it is what it is!

The books look good. Some eye catching covers there!

    Have a great week!

    1. That's exactly what it is, Emily. People understandably want to stay in the algorithm. The algorithm hates me, and I hate the algorithm .

  10. I agree with the IG comments above - there's only so much time in the day and trying to post to the blog, to FB, write the reviews, etc. AND figure out IG just became overwhelming. Maybe when I retire and have more time, I'll add IG. LOL. We're also watching lots of baseball at my house - Mariners fans here in Seattle.

  11. Hi Jen! I've just followed you on Instagram. I'm not good with Instagram at all and actually also want to be a bit better with it. But time is just a bit constrained for playing around. I should ask the younger teachers at school to help me, they seem to all be born with the know-hows.

Glad to hear you are enjoying Cloud Cuckoo Land, it landed in our Book Club last month and I can't wait to read it.

Have a good week and happy reading!

  15. I do the best I can with Instagram. I don't really do videos, so Reels is not something I care about. I guess they are trying to compete with TikTok?

  17. I don't have an Instagram account. I'm not a picture taker and mostly read ebooks which don't lend themselves to pictures anyway. Interesting assortment of books here. All of them are new to me. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  22. Huge fan of Brian K. Vaughn so I picked up Paper Girls when it came out. Have only still read just the first volume though. It was cool when I went on Amazon Prime and saw the adaptation because I didn't know they were doing that, and finished the season in a few days. Different from the comic but I actually enjoyed the changes!

  24. I'm getting so fed up with Instagram. I joined for the pretty book photos and knitting pictures; if I had wanted reels, I would have gone on TikTok. I'm trying to avoid "liking" any reels in an effort to nudge the algorithm into showing me more photos, but it's not helping much so far. I like your photos, though, so I signed up to follow you. (Also, I love your bookshelves!)

Have a wonderful week, and happy reading!
